What purchasing power means
Inflation reduces the amount a fixed sum of money can buy. Some people consider tangible assets when thinking about purchasing power over a long period. That motivation is different from a guarantee that a particular asset will track inflation month by month or preserve the value of every purchase.
Gold can move differently from inflation
Its price reflects several influences, including currency movements, financial conditions and investor demand. A period of higher inflation can coincide with a fall in gold. A chart covering a favourable start and end date cannot establish that gold will behave the same way over your own holding period.
Measure the result after costs
A nominal gain is the change in the money value of an asset. A real result also considers changes in purchasing power. For a physical holding, include purchase premiums, selling differences and storage or insurance costs when assessing the outcome. Gold provides no interest or dividends to offset those costs.
Use a balanced question
Instead of asking whether gold always beats inflation, ask what role a non-income-producing, fluctuating asset could play alongside the rest of your finances. Keep cash needs and potential losses in view. Seek independent advice if the decision affects retirement income or a significant share of your savings.
