Troy ounces and grams: compare like with like

Avoid a common pricing mistake when comparing a one-ounce coin with a gram-weight bar.

01

The ounce used for bullion

Precious metals are commonly quoted in troy ounces. One troy ounce is approximately 31.1035 grams. It differs from the everyday avoirdupois ounce, which is about 28.35 grams. When a bullion listing says 1oz, verify that it refers to a troy ounce and whether that is fine metal content or gross weight.

02

A worked comparison

Suppose two hypothetical products contain 31.1035g and 50g of fine gold. Dividing each full purchase price by its fine gold grams gives a price per fine gram. This is a clearer comparison than comparing their headline prices. Use quotations collected at the same time because the underlying market can move.

03

Why equal gold content can cost different amounts

Different manufacturing processes, quantities, condition and collector demand can change the premium. A low price per gram is one consideration, alongside authenticity, documentation and the practicality of selling only part of a holding. A single large bar cannot normally be sold in pieces.

04

Keep your calculation consistent

Use the same currency, include applicable charges, and keep sufficient decimal places until the final step. A spot reference is useful context, but it is not an offer to supply a finished product at that price. Ask for a written, time-limited quotation.

BEFORE YOU DECIDE

Understand the product.
Ask about the details.

Request a current written quotation and confirm all charges, availability and fulfilment terms. Precious metals can fall in value. Collector premiums may not be recovered on resale.
