Use several checks together
Branding, weight, dimensions, packaging and certification details can all inform an assessment. None should be treated in isolation as a guarantee. Counterfeit packaging and copied certification numbers are possible. Ask the dealer how the actual product is inspected and what information will accompany it.
Make the invoice useful
It should clearly identify the seller and the products supplied, including quantities and relevant specifications. Keep the agreed price and fulfilment documentation. Where individual serial or certification numbers are recorded, compare them with the items received and resolve discrepancies promptly.
Document the holding
Maintain an inventory with product names, purchase dates and supporting records. Store copies securely, separately from the physical items where appropriate. Avoid putting a detailed inventory with storage locations into an unsecured message or public image. Good records can make later enquiries and estate administration more straightforward.
Get help with uncertainty
If an item appears inconsistent with its description, contact the seller before altering it. Professional inspection may be needed. Home scratch tests, acid tests or opening a certified holder can damage an item and complicate a dispute. A good record supports an investigation but does not replace inspection of the product.
