An exemption with defined criteria
HMRC sets conditions for investment gold. Qualifying supplies are normally exempt from VAT; the description does not cover every object made of gold. Jewellery, certain collectibles and other gold products need separate consideration. Do not treat the words gold or investment in a sales title as confirmation of tax treatment.
Bars and coins are assessed differently
HMRC’s definition distinguishes qualifying bars or wafers from qualifying coins. Purity alone does not settle the treatment of every coin. Ask the supplier to identify the treatment used for the exact product and to provide a clear invoice. The investment-gold rules should not be applied automatically to silver.
VAT is separate from tax on a gain
A VAT exemption on purchase is not a blanket exemption from every tax that might affect ownership or disposal. Capital Gains Tax, inheritance considerations and business tax questions are separate matters. Your residency, ownership structure and circumstances can change the analysis.
Confirm before relying on a claim
This is an introduction to the distinction, rather than personal tax advice. Check the current HMRC rules or ask a qualified adviser before purchasing for a tax-planning purpose. Request the full amount payable in writing, including any applicable taxes and other charges. Tax rules can change.
BEFORE YOU DECIDE
Understand the product.
Ask about the details.
Request a current written quotation and confirm all charges, availability and fulfilment terms. Precious metals can fall in value. Collector premiums may not be recovered on resale.
